DIGITAL HARLEM | A GUIDE TO SEARCHING FOR EVENTS
NOTES
The two basic strategies to search for events are to:
- select an event type from the pulldown menu
- in the case of crimes, event types are most specific than legal charges. To search for a broad category of crime, use the “Charge” rather than the “Event type” pulldown. For example, the charge of assault appears as five different event types, stabbing, shooting, [physical] assault, domestic assault, and attacks on police.
- You can combine an event type with a date range to limit your search to a particular period
- select only a date range
- This search will return all types of event that occurred in the selected period
For events such as crimes, the relationship line (see Layers) links either:
- the location of the crime and the residence of the offender. At present, this data is not entered for most crimes; it is entered for all those charged with playing numbers (see the featured map Numbers Arrests)
- different locations related to a single event (in this case the event is marked with the icon appropriate to the event, and additional locations are identified with a colored circle)
