DIGITAL HARLEM | A GUIDE TO SEARCHING FOR PLACES
Notes
- To search for a specific address
- search for the street address, by typing a number into the ‘Street Number’ box and choosing the street from the pulldown menu (note the street names are as they were in the 1920s)
- search for the location by name, by typing its name (or a part of it) into the ‘Location Name’ box
- Use the ‘Location Type’ pulldown menu to search for locations such as churches, schools and businesses. There is no single category for business; instead, specific types of businesses appear in the pulldown menu
- You can combine a location type with a date range to limit your search to a particular period
- Use the date range alone to search for all the locations from the period you specify about which we have information
- The keyword search applies only to the comments about a location, not its name or address. Its primary function at present is to make it possible to identify black-owned businesses: typing ‘black business’ into this box will return those locations, or can be used to limit a search for a particular location type or for a particular time period
